Finpecia is manufactured by Cipla and used to treat male baldness.
Androgenetic alopecia (AGA) in men affects a large percentage of men worldwide. It is a hereditary condition in which the hair follicles are particularly sensitive to the sex hormone dihydrotestosterone (DHT). Male baldness begins above the temples and vertex, or calvaria, of the scalp. As it progresses, a rim of hair at the sides and rear of the head remains.
Each tablet of Finpecia contains the active ingredient Finasteride. Finaseride has a trichogenic (hair growth-promoting) activity. It is an oral type 2 5-alpha-reductase inhibitor that blocks the conversion of testosterone to the potent androgen 5-alpha-dihydrotestosterone (DHT). High levels of DHT can cause the hair follicle to miniaturize and atrophy. Finasteride decreases scalp and serum DHT concentrations, thus inhibiting a key factor in the etiology of androgenetic alopecia.
Finasteride dramatically reduces levels of DHT (by up to 60%), thus, taking Finpecia® largely decreases hair loss and increases hair growth.
Finasteride in higher doses (Finast, Fincar, Proscar, Prosteride) is used for the treatment and maintenance of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), female hirsutism (non-pregnant women with PCOS or with idiopathic hirsutism).
